Salt Pond Bay

025_1About as far away from Cruz Bay as you can get on St. John, Salt Pond Bay sits on the eastern side of the southern tip of Coral Bay. Accessible by only one road, visitors swarm to Salt Pond in-season for it's natural setting and multiple activity options. A small parking lot sits right off the main road, with a 1/4 mile walk down a moderate slope to the bay. There you'll find picnic tables scattered in the shade of the white sandy bay, adventurous hiking trails both strenuous and easy, and the best shallow water snorkeling on island.

drunk-bayTwo hiking options present themselves to visitors of Salt Pond Bay: Drunk Bay walking trail and Ram's Head hiking trail. Head north from Salt Pond Bay and walk along the infamous Salt Pond, as it guides you to the Eastern shore of Drunk Bay. This is a short hike, but a lingering destination. Take-in all the creative body forms and statues built from the coral, stones, and flotsam that washes ashore.

Hundreds of "coral people" scatter the shoreline, be sure to add yours before heading back. If a more heart-pumping hike is on your agenda, head south towards Ram's Head, with a well-maintained, but often poorly marked two-mile trail that climaxes at the top with incredible views and strong breezes.

french-angelfishTake it all in before heading back for a dip in the crystal clear sea at Salt Pond Bay. Underwater "cities" of rock, sea fans, coral, and colorful fish ebb and flow with the tide. Keep an eye out for the majestic sea turtles, lounging around and e joying this underwater paradise.
