Windspree Vacation Homes St John USVI

Getting Around in the US Virgin Islands

One of the most difficult parts of planning a vacation is figuring out how you and your party will get around your destination. Windspree Vacation Homes has spent the last 30 years serving the island of St. John, matching vacationers with gorgeous and private villas and offering helpful insight on how to make the most out of your vacation. We know a thing or two about the best and most cost-efficient ways to get around when you stay on St. John. Follow these helpful tips during your Virgin Island vacation:

  • Rent a car from a rental agency located on St. John. Because of the hilly landscape, Windspree recommends you get a vehicle with 4-wheel drive. After reserving one of our beautiful Virgin Island villas for you, one of our staff will even help you coordinate your car rental.
  • Take a taxi. Be aware that the taxis are not metered, so be sure to negotiate your fare before getting aboard. The taxis on the islands are safari-style vehicles that usually have three to five rows of open bench seating. They’ll make stops at major tourist spots and popular island destinations.
  • Take the local bus. While it may not be the most reliable form of transportation on the islands, the bus makes stops at major shopping and tourist centers. It leaves approximately every 45 minutes during normal hours of operation. Be sure to look up departure times carefully. It is best to take the bus when you aren’t in a hurry but want to enjoy “island time.” One of our Windspree staff is happy to talk you through taking the bus on St. John.
  • Utilize the ferry boat services to travel between the islands, or for a day trip to the British Virgin Islands. Inter-island ferry times can change, so be sure to do your research and contact the ferry boat companies for departure times. One of our Windspree staff can help you to understand ferry schedules and what islands the ferries service.
